* Hospital Pharmacy:-
• A hospital pharmacy is a department in a hospital that deals with the procurement, storage, compounding, dispensing, manufacturing, testing, packaging, and distribution of medicines.
• Hospital pharmacy controlled by the professionally and qualified pharmacist.
• It also focuses on education and research in pharmaceutical services.
* Functions of Hospital Pharmacy:-
1. Manufacturing.
2. Dispensing.
3. Purchasing and Inventory Control.
4. Storage.
5. Quality Control.
6. Clinical Pharmacy Services.
7. Drug Information Services.
8. Education and Training Services.
1. Manufacturing:-
• Involves preparing and distributing medicaments like transfusion fluids, parenteral products, tablets, capsules, ointments, etc.
2. Dispensing:-
• Dispensing medicines according to doctors’ prescriptions for patients in the hospital.
• Includes providing drugs to OPD (Outpatient Department) and IPD (Inpatient Department), as well as medical, surgical, and laboratory supplies.
3. Purchasing:-
•Involves giving specifications and managing the purchase of drugs, chemicals, and other materials needed in the hospital.
4. Storage:-
• Refers to the management of stores — includes purchasing, proper storage conditions, and keeping accurate records of drugs and supplies.
5. Quality Control:-
• Checks and certifies the quality of all drugs and materials used in the hospital to ensure safety and effectiveness.
6. Clinical Pharmacy Services:-
• Focuses on patient care by ensuring the proper use of medicines.
• Helps in promoting health and preventing diseases.
7. Drug Information Services:-
• Provides reliable information about medicines to doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to help them use drugs safely and effectively.
8. Education and Training Services:-
• Offers training and education to student pharmacists, nurses, doctors, and other healthcare workers to improve their knowledge and skills.
* Role of Hospital Pharmacy:-
• To ensure the availability of the right medication at the right time, in the right dose, and at the minimum possible cost.
• To professionalize the functioning of pharmaceutical services in a hospital.
• To act as a counseling department for medical staff, nurses, and patients.
• To act as a data bank on drug utilization.
• To participate in research projects.
• To implement the decisions of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
* Organization Structure:-
• It involves the complete structure of the hospital pharmacy, which includes the head of pharmacy services known as the Chief Pharmacist.
• The Chief Pharmacist is responsible for the overall functioning of the department.
• They have the responsibility to plan, organize, and control all activities of the hospital pharmacy.
• Other pharmacists perform their functions according to their departments, but they also have to learn the work of other sections as well.
